NHGA/NHWGA Transition Update

The NHWGA held its annual meeting on Saturday, October 17th. The association conducted annual business, including the election of directors and officers to new terms, and approval of a budget for 2021. Additionally, NHGA Executive Director, Matt Schmidt and NHGA President, Joanne Flynn were present as invited guests.

Matt gave a brief overview of his background, the evolution of the NHGA over the past seven years, and shed some light on past negotiations between the two organizations. There was a period of Q&A in which NHWGA members were permitted to ask Joanne and Matt questions about the consolidation and what the impact would be on NHGWA members. A number of very important questions were asked and answered by Matt.

Post-meeting, many NHWGA members expressed to the leadership of the NHWGA that they continue to be excited about the direction of continued conversations and appreciated the opportunity to engage in the process at the meeting.

The NHGA wrapped up its tournament season on October 27th and will hold its annual meeting virtually on Thursday, November 19th. After the annual meeting is adjourned, the NHGA will hold a board meeting to approve a 2021 budget and discuss other items relevant to the organization.

Once the NHGA budget has been approved, both sides feel it will be an appropriate time to address the financial implications of creating a single entity. This will involve a deep dive into each budget and the creation of a sample budget which will allow both the Transition Committee and respective Board of Directors to vet the financial viability of the new organization. Both sides anticipate that finances will be examined by parties both inside and outside of either organization.

Finally, while the NHGA and NHWGA continue conversations working toward one fully consolidated organization in 2022, we feel it is important to focus on and use 2021 as a year of transition. Both organizations will be working together over the coming weeks to create a clear delineation of the roles and responsibilities for current staff, volunteers, and board members as we look at finalizing 2021 event schedules.
